What are serial dilutions?

Serial dilutions involve the stepwise dilution of a substance in a solution, typically by a constant factor, to reduce the concentration of microorganisms to a manageable level. This is useful to count the colony-forming units (CFU) per millilitre or gram, where each colony represents a viable microorganism from the original sample.
