Applications.

The Dilucup System is a universal solution for every laboratory where there is a need to perform decimal dilutions. The current range of available diluents, along with the volume of the cups (9 mL) makes it very suitable to the following kinds of industries:

Food Microbiology.

Dilucup is largely used by microbiological laboratories in all kinds of food industries but also by a large number of service/contract laboratories, who use the system to process food & feed samples. For the analysis of liquid products (milk, juice, drinks,…) Dilucup can be used for all dilutions. A first dilution, often in a stomacher bag, is needed for other matrices such as meat, fish, whole egg, vegetables, animal feed, milk powder, cream, etc… The growing trend to use Pro or Prebiotics in food also contributes to the promotion of Dilucup. Indeed, the demand for a larger range of dilutions (up to 8 – 12 successive dilutions on a sample) is increasing again, despite a usually lower contamination of the raw materials than in the past.

For food analysis, the Dilucup MRD (Maximal Recovery Diluent) is the most popular product together with the Dilucup BPW (Buffered Peptone Water).

Bio Industry.

Biotechnological processes and especially all fermentation types need to be controlled and monitored at various levels:

  • The purity and the concentration of the starters (bacteria, yeasts) has to be checked
  • The microbiological population in reactors/ fermenters must be quantified along the entire process
  • The quality of the final products has to be assessed

In parallel to other types of measurement (pH, O2 pressure, metabolites,…) or alternative methods, the classical enumeration of the flora is still a must. In this kind of industry, the Dilucup System is particularly advantageous because it combines, even for large numbers of dilutions, easy handling and accuracy.

Paper Industry & Process Water.

The modern pulp and paper industry does not tolerate high microbiological contamination in its various circuits. Slime forming bacteria are prohibited around the paper machines and their growth is controlled through the use of efficient combinations of chemicals (biocides, dispersing agents,…). This methodology is also used in many other industrial plants, especially where significant risks can be generated by the microflora present in pipes, basins, tanks or cooling towers.

The companies supplying these chemicals, or staff who work within the industry, often perform microbiological tests in order to check that the flora is suitably controlled. The Dilucup, which is not only easy to use but also to store and to transport, represents the perfect alternative to dilution tubes in such environment.

Cosmetics.

It’s common to introduce microbial inhibitors in cosmetics to prevent the proliferation of microorganisms in the products. The efficiency of these inhibitors must be checked with a microbiological method, according to USP chapter 51 for instance. Antimicrobial preservative challenge test consists of challenging the product with a high concentration of known microorganisms. Several strains (bacteria and fungi) are used.

Initial concentrations of the test microorganisms are determined by standard microbiological techniques. Inoculated samples are incubated before surviving microorganisms are counted after 7, 14 and 28 days. Because of a minimum number of 5 strains tested at least 4 times in a one-month period, each sample requires a lot of dilutions. The Dilucup System, ideally designed for this application, makes the job much easier and quicker. The Dilucup Elegance NACL is particularly recommended for this use.
